What's a Photon?
A Photon is the fundamental particle of light and other electromagnetic radiation. A photon has no mass, no electric charge and acts as a quantum of energy. It travels at the speed of light and exhibits both wave-like and particle-like properties.
(I.e: Wavelenght and Momentum)
Its energy is directly proportional to its frequency : E=hγ, where h is Planck's constant and γ is the frequency.
Photons are in charge of transmitting light energy, enabling vision, and other processes
such that: photosynthesis, photography, light-based communication technology, fiber optics etc...
What's a Laser?
The term LASER comes from an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, which describes the process used to create a laser's focused beam of light.
This process involves exciting atoms or molecules in a particular medium to release photons, which are then amplified and directed into a single, highly coherent, and parallel beam.
-
Light Amplification: The process takes a small number of photons and amplifies them into a much larger number of identical photons.
-
Stimulated Emission: This is the key principle. When an excited atom is hit by a photon, it releases an identical photon, stimulating more emission.
-
Radiation: The result is a stream of electromagnetic radiation, specifically light, with a single wavelength and a narrow beam.
A basic laser device includes three (3) main components:
-
A lasing medium: This is the material (a gas, solid, or liquid) whose atoms or molecules will be stimulated to emit light.
-
An energy source: This "pumps" energy into the medium to excite the atoms, often using a flash lamp or electrical discharge.
-
An optical cavity/Resonator: This consists of mirrors, one fully reflective and the other partially reflective on which particles of light bounce back and forth through the medium, amplifying it until it can escape through the partially reflective mirror as a laser beam.
